Ch - Chain
2sctog - decrease by 1 stitch by working 2 single crochet stitches together
2sctog in the BL - work 2 single crochet stitches together in the Back Loops of each stitch
sc - single crochet
Materials Used to crochet the Octopus
- SMALL - To crochet a small pocket octo which measures 3 inches across and 2.5 inches in height

I made the BLUE octopus, with 2 strands of Flutterby by James C Brett (Bulky / 12 ply (7 wpi) held together and it gave me a slightly larger octopus measuring just under 3 and a half inches tall and 5 inches across.
But if you want a mini octo or pocket octopus you can use 1 strand of flutterby! use a 4.00mm hook and use the YARN UNDER method, for tighter stitches!
You will also require a Small amount of Stuffing 2 saftey eyes
The Yarn Under Single Crochet (YUSC) is a special technique often used in making amigurumi and crochet toys and it creates a tighter stitch. Here are the step-by-step instructions for YUSC
- Insert your hook into the stitch, chain, or magic circle.
- YARN UNDER the hook and pull up a loop (you’ll have two loops on your hook).
- Yarn over the hook and pull through both loops.
That’s it! The YUSC gives a lovely texture and is perfect for making adorable crochet toys. You can use it with any yarn and hook.
Starting in your chosen colour of yarn and compatible crochet hook size
Rnd 1: Ch2, and work 8SC into the FIRST chain, DO NOT JOIN, place marker here and each round after (8 sts)
Rnd 2: work 2SC into each stitch around, (16 sts)
Rnd 3: SC in the next stitch, 2SC in the next stitch (24 sts)
Rnd 4 to Rnd 8: SC in each stitch (24) (work 5 FULL rounds)
If you are adding safety yes add them here between Rnd 6 and Rnd 7 4 stitches apart.
Rnd 9: working in the Back LOOPS 2sctog, around (12sts)
STUFF the Octopus to shape here.
Rnd 10: 2sctog around. (6sts)
Finish stuffing if required to shape and SEW through the remaining stitches and pull to tighten to close the space.
Tentacles, (make 8 around)
Join yarn with a slip stitch into ANY of the FRONT loops from Rnd 8,* skip next st, (2HDC,DC,2HDC) all in the next st, slipst into next st* repeat from *to* around, (8 tentacles)
Fasten off and weave in ALL ENDS
