This is the best way to create a baby beanie hat, and I use it as the base for most of my hats that I like to add onto!

this is how the top of your hat should look, working in a spiral from the beginning.
How to make and add the earflaps on a beanie hat

I start the earflaps at the best position on the hat, you will know by the shape of the hat to lay it flat and guess the best position, most patterns will say
when making earflps. Start the 1st one right where your hat left off. Fasten off. Then start the second one on the opposite side of the hat. I sometimes go by the actual hat, depending on yarn and hook used,

1. sc 11, ch 1 turn
2. sc2tog, 1 sc in next 7 stitches, sc2tog, ch 1 turn
3. sc across, ch 1 turn
4. sc2tog, 1 sc in next 5 stitches, sc2tog, ch 1 turn
5. sc across, ch 1 turn
6. sc2tog, 1 sc in next 3 stitches, sc2tog, ch 1 turn
7. sc across, ch 1 turn
8. sc2tog, 1 sc in next 1 stitches, sc2tog, ch 1 turn
9. sc across, ch 1 turn
10. sc2tog, fasten off

BORDER
Choose a complimentary colour and Single crochet all the way round your hat and earflaps.

How to crochet the Animal Ears (Make 2)
1. Make magic circle, sc 6 in circle (do not join)
2. Sc 2 in each stitch around
(use stitch marker to mark your first stitch, and every first stitch in each round)
3. *2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next* repeat from * around
4-5. Sc across
Fasten off

Sew in all loose threads, and make tie cords, I usually use lengths of yarn twisted together, fold in half so they spiral together, and presto you have lovely attatched baby hat cords.

  1. What a great pattern and thank you for making it free. I love that you kind of gave the basic recipe for the start of a lot of different hat patterns. It gives you the encouragement to make more and more. thank you.

  2. I am in the middle of tackling this pattern and since I am a beginner at crochet, I find I am getting confused. Could you tell me if the steps in the hat pattern (such as 3, 4, 5) are to be performed in the entire row, or just as it is listed and then move on to the next step. Also what does the * mean?

  3. Cassie sorry for the confusemnet!
Please Bear with me as I am only recently writing patterns, so this is great you pointed this out.
these rows are INCREACing rounds, you are going to make 2sc stitches in the 1sc of previous round, at the given place.
** means repeat around the round.

    3. *2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next repeat ** round
    4. *2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next 2 stitches* repeat** round
    5. *2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next 3 stitches* repeat ** round
    6. *2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next 4 stitches repeat ** round
    7. *2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next 5 stitches* repeat **round

your hat will start to take on the shape of the hat at these rounds and the pattern if you hold it out looks kind of like a hexagon. I will try to upload a photo that shows the effect for you too.
Once you make the hat do let me know how you get on!

  6. Does it matter what size crochet hook you use? What about the thickness of yarn? Thanks!

    1. I used 4.mm and DK yarn for this hat, whit fits my friends 12 month old baby. you can achieve larger or maller by changing size hooks, thickness of yarn etc.

    2. I am new to the lingo of crochet--what is DK yarn? I would like to attempt this hat for a newborn up to 3 months--should I still use the 4 mm? Thanks so much!

    3. 3ply or baby 2ply would work since it is for smaller baby
DK- Double Knitting wool is a versatile, medium weight and it is mostly what I use, I find it really good for use in hats for baby, it is soft once washed, and keeps good shape.
This is also a really nice one here http://www.amazon.com/Premier-Yarns-Deborah-Norville-Everyday/dp/B004L6LVVQ/ref=pd_sbs_ac_3

  7. Would 3 oz. yarn work for this pattern and still with a 4mm hook? Thanks!

  8. Thank you for forcing me to google the magic circle with this pattern... I don't think I'll ever be the same. lol All I could say while doing it was 'oooooooohhh!!! oooooohhh!!!!!!"

  9. How many rows should I do to achieve the diameter for a 3-6 month old baby? Should I go all the way to 28? Thanks!

  10. the general rule of thumb for head sizes is!
    Baby - 3 to 6 months
    Head Circumference: 14" - 17 "
Hat height- 6.5 - 7" I find I crochet quite losely so, your 28 may be different size to mine.
Most hat patterns I can make for any size following the sizes on here : http://www.crochet-patterns-free.com/p/head-sizes-for-crochet-hats.html
    Hope this helps :)

  11. Do I just keep repeating the steps to achieve the desired length or are those steps just for achieving the head circumference? I'm on row 26 now and the hat seems to just get broader but not taller--am I doing something wrong? Thanks so much for your guidance :)

    ReplyDelete
  12. When YOU have reached desired circumference of head.....stop any increacing, and just work in the round. When you are no longer increacing stitches the hat will get longer!
Some hats are made in rouws, slipping into 1st st then chain to start next round.
this hat is made in rounds, kind of like a spiral affect.
please let me now if this helps

  13. Okay, got it. My hat is getting taller so that is good. Now I have a question on the ear flaps. Am I right that these aren't attached separately? My yarn ball is getting tiny and I'm concerned I wont have enough to make the flaps--can I somehow weave in extra yarn? Also, what is tog? Thanks so much for your help!

    1. No the earflaps are worked into the rim of the hat on each side.
tog= working stitches together, sorry cannot help with your yarn :)

  14. I am having difficulty with the pattern for the earflaps. When you say to begin where your hat left off, do I then make an additional 11 sc's? Then chain one stitch, turn my work around and basically decrease by turning 2 stitches into 1? Thanks for the clarification.

  15. I wrote "I start the earflaps at the best position on the hat, you will know by the shape of the hat lay it flat and guess the best position,

I go by the actual hat, depending on yarn and hook used. and shape of hat.
So Guess work and judgement used here!
Folding the hat in half, count 5 single crochets either side of 1 single crochet. (11single crochet)
I find for any hat with earflaps, it is better to judge than to count, as due to tension and yarn differences
And yes decrease by 2 into 1.....

Now I want a photo of this hat!!!!! and its going on this page ....lol :)

  16. I am still not sure if I'm interpreting the pattern correctly. I keep starting over! How many times do I repeat the steps? For example, "2 sc in 1, 1 sc"--am I doing that sequence two times? Thanks for your help. If I ever make this hat successfully, I will post a picture :)

    ReplyDelete
  17. 2sc in 1 = Increase by adding 1 sc
    (or)
Work the sequences all the way round the hat,

work 1 single, repeat this step all the way around, make 2sc in 1 stitch, 1sc, 2sc, 1sc, 2sc, 1sc....
repeat all the way round is anything between the * *

  18. This may be a dumb question, but what does fasten off mean? When I am done with the first ear flap, do I tie off the yarn and then cut it? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  24. this is a decrease
{2 Single crochet together} make 1 Single crochet 1/2 finished, make another single crochet, (2 loops on hook) then finish off the stitch. you will find this decreaces 1 stitch!
    hope this makes sense :)
