I have also now included How to use the square mesh stitch to create the popular crochet Mesh sleeves top.

My daughter is wanting the mesh sleeve top and wanted a black mesh long-sleeved top, to wear over a cami top and with her shorts.

This is part of her Festival crochet aesthetic this year. Along with her favorite Crochet Bucket Hat

If you are a confident crocheter.
Please scroll to the bottom of the page for the Simple Written Crochet Pattern for the Open Square Mesh.
If you are a beginner please read on.

The Large Square Open Mesh Crochet fabric is made with combinations of Treble Crochet stitches worked Into the TOP of the previous rows treble crochet stitches (trc) , with Chain 2 (ch2) spaces in between.

Working in this simple sequence will make a stacked Square open mesh crochet lacy square fabric effect.

Please Do not be put off by that description of the open mesh stitch. AND It is VERY extremely easy to make items from crocheted mesh fabric.

Such items as the popular open mesh crochet top with sleeves. Which must be the easiest croche ttop to make that is hot right now!

crochet mesh stitch free pattern EASY

The mesh stitch particularly in the treble crochet can be used to create a lacy fabric that is perfect for lightweight garments or accessories such as scarves and shawls, wearable clothing items like T-shirts  Beach covers, Wrap around mesh skirts, and the lacy effect created is ideal for making a handy mesh market shopping bags that fit neatly into a handbag when not used.

The mesh technique can also be combined with other stitches or used in other combinations with different colors to create interesting and unique designs.

Please Note The Open Mesh Square Pattern is written in US terms

This open mesh crochet stitch pattern is formed by a Treble Crochet (trc)  with Chain 2 spaces between each treble.
Working the NEXT rows Treble crochet directly into the Top of the previous rows' treble crochet.

Crocheting any type of mesh fabric is an easy process that involves creating a series of chains and then connecting them with slip stitches (slst) single crochet (Sc), Double Crochet (dc) Treble crochets (trc), and even longer crochet stitches if required.

That type of yarn and Size of Crochet Hook do you need to crochet an open mesh stitch?

Any compatible yarn and hook can be used to make the open square mesh.

Choose your yarn and crochet hook, please remember that the size of your hook and the weight of your yarn will determine the size of your crocheted mesh fabric.

For example:
  • To Crochet a more open and airy mesh you would use a larger hook and a lighter-weight (thin) yarn.
  • To crochet denser mesh you would use a smaller hook and a heavier-weight (thicker) yarn.
For the purposes of this written pattern, we will use triple crochet (trc), which results in a much looser pattern because it is a taller crochet stitch.

How to make a Treble Crochet Stitch

To make a treble crochet:

Place yarn over the hook twice before inserting the hook, into the specified chain from the hook
(not counting the loop on the hook).
Place yarn over hook again and draw yarn through on loop.
There are now 4 loops on the hook.
Place yarn over the hook and draw yarn through 2 of the loops on the hook.
There are now 3 loops on the hook.
Place yarn over the hook and draw yarn through 2 of the loops on the hook.
There are now 2 loops on the hook.
Place yarn over the hook and draw yarn through both loops on the hook, one triple crochet (trc) completed.

To start the Open Mesh stitch. Crocheting a foundation Chain for the mesh stitch

Make a chain to your desired length.

Do this by creating a slip knot and then looping the yarn over the hook. Pull the yarn through the slip knot to create a chain stitch

Repeat this process until the chain is the desired length. (note: for sleeve mesh top your measurement from wrist to wrist see sizes below)

Things you need to know for Making the Crochet Mesh Top using the Open Mesh Square Pattern

You will need your chosen Hook and Yarn.
For the BLACK mesh top, I used a 4.50mm and Double knit yarn.

The beginning chain needs to be long enough to measure from Wrist to Wrist with a little extra
Start by making a foundation chain (ch)  that is the desired length of your fabric. (wrist-to-wrist)  measurement.

Approximate Sizing for the Mesh crochet Top

SMALL - 68 inches + 8 extra chain sts
MEDIUM - 69 inches + 8 extra chain sts
LARGE - 70 inches + 8 extra chain sts
EXTRA LARGE - 71 inches + 8 extra chain sts

I am also an extremely loose crocheter.
So please pay attention to the sizing for you.
Ensure you measure correctly for your size.

You must make the  foundation chain that is divisible by 3 (BEFORE ADDING an extra 9sts)  (so you may need to go slightly OVER your measurement.)

You will then  ADD an extra 9 chains
(the extra 9 chains are counted as the 1st Treble Crochet, chain 2,  and skip 2, at the START of your work, you will also work the last stitch of the row into this chain as stated )

Basic Open MESH Written Pattern is as follows

Make the chain foundation multiple of 3 and ADD to this number 9 extra chains .(counts as first Trc ch. 2, skip 2 ch, )

Row 1:Work 1Trc,  in 9th ch from hook, * ch2, skip 2ch, 1Trc. in next ch. Repeat from * eto end working  1 Trc into the 4th chain of starting chain

Row 2: Ch. 6  to turn, * 1 Trc in top of previous rows Trc,  ch. 2, skip 2 ch.* Repeat from * to end , and end with 1 Trc. into the 4th ch. of the start chain of the previous row.

Repeat Row 2

ROW 1: Foundation row of the square open Mesh stitch)
Chain until you reach the LENGTH required for your size, TURN

(RS)Working the 1st Trc, Into the 9th ch from hook, (These first missed chains count as the first trc, skip 2, 2ch space, and you will work the LAST stitch of Next row into the 4th chain of the starting ch )
So make sure those chain stitches are loose.
*Ch2, SKIP 2 ch, Treble Crochet into the next ch*, rep from * to end.
Chain 6 and TURN your work.

ROW 2:  (chain 6  to count as first trc and 2ch space), SKIP 2 sts,
Working INTO the TOP of the previous row stitch,  Treble Crochet into the next st,  chain 2, SKIP 2, treble crochet (trc) into the next st, *2ch, Skip 2ch space,  Treble Crochet into the TOP of previous rows Treble Crochet *  rep from * working last tr into 4th chain of 9 chains at the start from previous row. Chain 6 TURN.

To continue the mesh pattern

You simply Repeat Row 2 until Desired Length is reached.
The 2nd row forms the pattern, ending each row working the last treble crochet INTO the 5th Chain of the Turning chain of the previous row.

How To make the mesh Top with sleeves with minimal sewing!

Chain a length to the SIZE required PLUS add on an extra 9 sts

Crochet in the Open Square mesh pattern the amount of rows you wish the FRONT to be I found 7 Rows to be perfect for my daughter (medium)

NECK OPENING : I folded this piece from short ends to short ends and counted 20 BLOCKS back each way or  ( space must be big enough to fit over your head) - PLACE MARKERS (as shown in the picture below)
open mesh crochet stitch to make a mesh top with sleeves

Row 8: start the Row as normal until you reach the FIRST maker , Chain the number of stitches you have skipped  (I chained 60 here) Continue working trc, ch2, skip 2 across to the end.

open mesh sleeve top free crochet mesh pattern

BACK:
Row 9:  Ch. 6  to turn, working into each stitch and including the Chain across
* 1 Trc in top of previous rows Trc,  ch. 2, skip 2 ch.* Repeat from * to end, and end with 1 Trc. into the 4th ch. of the start chain of the previous row.

Row 10 - 15: Repeat Row 2 and complete the next side of crochet top.

Fasten off.
Again using the middle as a guide measure your Chest Circumference
Use a piece of yarn to close up the under the seam of  ARMS to your underarm.

How to crochet the Mesh Stitch and crochet a Mesh Top with Sleeves

Repeat for the second arm (make sure you're happy with the placement, of the underarm seam I don't make them too close to the actual underarm measurements as I've found massive differences between my daughter and nieces) so I'm afraid this is a guesstimate at best!

I sewed five LESS large square holes back from the neck opening
And fasten off neatly
Repeat for the second Sleeve

mesh crochet top with sleeves - Easy crochet pattern

Now IF you wanted to make the mesh sweater longer continue working Around the Unworked mesh blocks of underarms front and back in continuous rounds and continue down the body you can easily turn this into a Long sleeved mesh top.
