To crochet this bag you will need the BASIC Heart in a Square Crochet Pattern.

I have a STEP by Step tutorial available to help you crochet the heart granny square. HERE

The BASIC Heart in a Square written Pattern

Materials:
4.500mm hook & a Double Knit Yarn. (or yarn and hook of your choice)

NOTES:

  • I am an extremely loose crocheter, you may need to go up a hook size, especially when making the sc in round 3. (make these VERY loose stitches.)
  • granny heart square free crochet pattern to crochet square with a heart in the middle

  • To start the crochet heart you will Loosley chain 4 to start and work ALL the first round of stitches into the FIRST chain from the hook.

  • This crochet heart does not start with a magic ring. TO start the crochet heart you will Loosley chain 4 to start and work ALL the first round of stitches into the FIRST chain from the hook. I find this method the BEST and easier to tighten and fasten off securely.

ABBREVIATIONS

dbltrc = Double Treble Crochet (yarn over 4 times)
trc = treble crochet (yarn over 3 times)

How to Make the Crochet HEART BAG

You will need 14 Crocheted Squares to make this bag.

Granny Square Layout and how to read the Graph

1. Take 4 Squares and sew them together with a whip stitch to join. (Make 2 LARGE squares of 4 Squares together)

Join the REMIAIN 6 Squares as shown in the MIDDLE HERE 3 + 3 and sewn together in the way as shown

LAY ALL the pieces together as shown in the picture and hold BOTH seams of the Squares to be sewn together.

Join the crochet squares by working either single crochet through both squares Edges
 (A to A) and (B to B) to edge

or if you know how to crochet the CRAB STITCH then this is also a lovely way to add a structured finish to your bag.

Just for your info the Crab stitch is literally a single crochet stitch but you work the single crochet stitch backward

TOP OF BAG

2. REFER BACK to the Graphic above paying attention to The BLUE strips and BLACK DOTS
 On ALL sides as shown.

Join Yarn with the right side facing you of the FOUR squares sewn together.

Work a single crochet in each stitch  ALONG the TOP SIDE of the bag.
Ch1, TURN repeat single crochet in the BACK loops of previous rows stitches  FOR 2 more ROWS  (3 in total)

Continuing in single crochet, The BLACK DOTS on the corners of the BLUE are the PLACEMENT of the ch3 HOLES to thread the chords through for the handles. )

The position of the HOLES (2 holes each side of the SINGLE panel,  a hole  at the Beginning and at EACH END of the 4 Panels sewn together

You will create  THE HOLES for the chord by  (ch3)  to enable you to weave the cord through and for the crochet bag to sit properly.

HOLES for the CORD LOOP ROW single crochet in the back loop when you get to the HOLE positions,   LAST 6 sts of the Square, ch3, and single crochet in the LAST 3 stitches.

(the middle stitches in the single panel will be LESS than the 2 Squares together, (BOTH The tassel ENDs will come through here)

Making a twisted cord for a crochet bag is extremely easy and one of my favorite ways to make handles and straps for my crochet bags because once made it has limited stretch.

How to make a Cord handle for a bag

You will need YARN in your chosen color
easy crochet cord for a bag

Cut a length of yarn that is twice as long as the desired finished cord.
Fold the yarn in half to create a loop at one end.

Hold the loop end and the two loose ends together in one hand and twist the yarn by rotating the yarn in one direction. (I have used an electric drill for this!)

Keep twisting until the cord begins to hold its shape and is the desired thickness. (be mindful this will then double in size once twisted together.

holding BOTH ends of the cord. all ow the chord to twist back on itself.

At this point, you may need to help it into its twisted state so push your hand gently along the chord to help it go straight. KEEP HOLD OF THE ENDS. Do not let them go.

Once happy with your cord.
Tie a knot at EACH end of the twisted cord to secure it.

granny heart crochet pattern granny square tote bag

How to Thread the Bags cords (the cords will cross over I prefer this as the cord does not dig in as much and helps distribute the weight of the bag.

Starting at one side of the bag's single panels weave one of the ends of the chord, in towards the middle of the bag,  outwards then thread through the  SIDE hole
Jump OVER to the OPPOSIT side of the Bag and repeat

With the 2 ends held together KNOT tightly and cut leaving around 2 inches for a tassel.

How to make a twisted cord EASY

Repeat for a second handle.

When threading the second cord remember to cross it over the opposite bag chord.

BEFORE threading through the chord holes for the opposite side handle.

Finishing the bag

I have ordered some black Material as I want to line this bag.

TO line the crochet bag, simply cut your material EXACTLY like how the LAYOUT shown above is but leave at least an inch around the outline to be able to sew the sides together,

I have a magic tool (AWL)  I use for creating holes into the material. as  I Work SLIP stitch through Both Material and the top of my bag at the top of the squares

This is also awesome if you're not weaving in your ends and hiding it all!

I love the bag organizers you can buy from Amazon to put into your bags so you can easily swap what bag you are using with everything kept safe.

It is genius and makes a great gift idea for someone who loves changing their bags but not swapping all their stuff over.

You are Ready to Take your bag out!
