This adorable sun hat was actually made for my niece when she was 18 months old, (but she was a very small baby) The hat is 16 inches in circumference around the widest part of the head and fits a 6-12-month-old toddler.
If I wanted a slightly smaller size for ages 3-6 months I would drop a half hook size to a 3.50 mm(BUT I work extremely Loosley Please check measurements of HAT as you make it.

Childs Crochet Sun Hat Pattern:
I used a 4.0mm UK hook and Double Knit Yarn. or as Martha has used in the pretty hat seen below Schachenmayr Catania Cotton (fingering weight)
Finish off these hats with some matching ribbon or a crochet flower as seen.
Please Note:I crochet EXTREMELY loosely! please check measurements at crown diameter (crown diameter = once you have increased the final round) to make sure it fits as you go!
The hat will fit 6-12 months
Crown diameter - 4.5 inches approx
Hat height to the BASE of the ear will be 6.75 inches
Ch2, does not count as the first stitch, you will be working the first dc into the base of the ch2, in each round)
Stitches are written in US Terms
sc- single crochet
dc- double crochet
slst - slip stitch (slip into the Chain 1 of each round)
Work the start of each round INTO the BASE of the Chain to start.
Gauge:
The main part of the hat is crocheted loosely (5dc=1 inch)
When you start the brim (RND 17) crochet this tighter in the first couple of rounds or change to a smaller hook for the next 3 rounds if you want the brim stiffer, and not floppy.
