I found this crochet baby hat
pattern that looks just like an aviator looking style baby crochet hat.
I was getting asked for crochet baby hat patterns especially for boys, and of course easy for the beginner at crochet.

Following the simple baby beanie crochet hat pattern, adding in ear flaps and a flap at the front, turning it up and adding 2 buttons to hold the flap in place.
I found it really easy to achieve this look perfect for the little man in your life. Or even easy to adjust and make a larger version for a fantastic crochet hat for men.

I need the "grown-up" version!
ReplyDeleteI have just made a similar one for my husband I used a 5.00mm (UK) hook and doubled the yarn! it fits cozy and is just perfect for him.....lol....
ReplyDeleteLisa thank you for this pattern, I'm making one now. I have a question on your ear flaps should I be crocheting a row in between the dec row?? yours looks to be about 8 rows long.
ReplyDeleteI did for the picture on, and the earflaps were really long! but my friend wanted them that way for a photo shoot as she had goggles to go over it (looked so cute)
ReplyDeleteanyway depending on your tension overall size leave out the extra rows!
Love that you're a lefty as well! I was trying to teach my little sister (who's a righty) how to crochet & I'm like 'really? out of all the people who crochet I'm probably the worst one to teach you because everything is backwards for either you or me.' haha
ReplyDeleteIs there a simple way that I could adjust this to fit a newborn? I am not a complete beginner, but am not sure how much I should decrease the size. Thanks much!
ReplyDeleteprobably your best bet woudl be to follow THIS PATTERN http://www.crochet-patterns-free.com/2012/12/crochet-baby-hat-pattern-earflaps.html
ReplyDelete(which is for a smaller sized baby) and make the front as the picture above
using smaller hooks and finer yarn will also decrease slightly paterns, say you found a pattern for a 6 month old but wanted for a newborn drop a hook size :)
See this guide on head sizes for hats to gauge a size for who you are crocheting http://www.crochet-patterns-free.com/p/head-sizes-for-crochet-hats.html
- The easiest way to explain making a baby hat smaller is the amount of increases you make is to fit the circumference (around) babys head - once you have reached the desired circumference stop the increases and continue to just crochet around in the stitch.
To make the ear flaps fold the hat in half (with join seam at back) and start your earflaps at the same point of each other on the sides.
To make the front panel Start the different color at the top of the first front facing stitch of ear flap working around as you are working around the hat in the different color around the earflaps back next earflap towards front, just work those front gap crochet stitches in rows back and forth, until a length is desired for flap to look good. and then finish
hope it helps :)
