I personally LOVE this to give as a GIFT to a newborn baby! I have made many crochet baby blankets over the years, and a find I am asked time and time again for a really textured baby blanket.
In this blog post, I will show you how to crochet a baby blanket using this stitch, with a free written pattern that is suitable for beginners or more advanced crocheters.
With the Crystal Waves stitch Instead of working into the usual place at the top of a stitch.
You will work around the POST of one of the previous rows of double crochets. This creates a raised ridge that forms the wave effect. Honestly, it Is easy once you master that first 2 rows.
This baby blanket works up FAST too.
What size is the Crystal Waves Baby Blanket and can You make it bigger or smaller?
To crochet the Crystal Wave Stitch Blanket You will need a width of the final number of your chains at the beginning to be able to divide by 4 (8,12, 16, 20,.......etc)
I am often asked about my thoughts on crochet blanket sizes,
What size should a baby blanket be?
There are the standard sizes (see below) but really there is no definitive answer to this question, as different patterns and preferences may vary.
There are some approximate and general guidelines for blanket sizes that can help you choose the right size for your project.
The most common sizes of baby crochet blankets are:
Preemie Blanket Size : 18 x 20 inches.
This size is suitable for premature babies or newborns who need extra warmth and comfort. Preemie blankets are usually made with soft and lightweight yarns, such as acrylic or cotton blends.
- Stroller Blanket Size: 30 x 35 inches.
This size is ideal for covering a baby in a stroller or car seat, as it provides enough coverage without being too bulky or long. Stroller blankets can be made with any type of yarn, depending on the season and the desired texture.
- Receiving Blanket Size: 40 x 40 inches. This is my most popular Size to make for a new baby.
This size is the most versatile and popular for baby crochet blankets, as it can be used for swaddling, cuddling, nursing, or playing.
Receiving blankets can be made with any type of yarn, but they should be soft and cozy for the baby's skin.
If making a crocheted baby blanket that you feel has too big gaps! then please warn parents about risks to little fingers begin caught
I ALWAYS suggest the blankets with gaps are for decorative purposes only!
- Crib Blanket size 45 x 60 inches. (AS Above size)
This site is designed to fit a standard crib mattress, and it can also be used as a toddler blanket when the baby grows up. Crib blankets can be made with any type of yarn, but they should be durable and washable, as they will get more wear and tear than other sizes.
- Afghan Blanket size: 50 x 65 inches.
This blanket is the largest and most luxurious for baby crochet blankets, and it can also be used as a throw or a bedspread for older children or adults.
Afghan blankets can be made with any type of yarn, but they should be warm and cozy, as they will provide more insulation than other sizes.
What yarn is needed to Crochet The Crystal Waves Baby Blanket
I used 2 strands of 4 Ply held together. (King Cole Brand as it's super soft and snuggly) You can use any Yarn you wish just remember to adjust hook sizes if necessary.
You will need to be familiar with these crochet terms to complete the crystal waves crochet pattern. If in doubt Re-read the whole POST
The pattern is written in US terms and uses the following stitches:
- Chain (ch)
- Single crochet (sc)
- Double crochet (dc)
- Front post single crochet (fpsc)
- slip stitch (slst)
How to Make a Front Post Single Crochet Stitch
The front post single crochet stitch is worked around the specified post of a st in the previous row, instead of into the top of st.
The post is the vertical part of the stitch that looks like a small column.
To make a front post single crochet stitch, follow these steps:
1. Insert your hook from front to back around the post of the next stitch in the previous row.
2. Yarn over and pull up a loop. You should have two loops on your hook.
3. Yarn over and pull through both loops on your hook. You have just made one Font Pst Sngle Cochet Stch. (FPSC)
The Crystal Waves Stitch is working in ROWS and once you have made the FIRST row it is a simple repetition of *Skip 3 chain stitches, Front Post Single Crochet around the previous rows last Dc within the group of 3Dc sts, Ch3, 3 Dc in the same chain stitch as the Sc*
This repeat makes up the main pattern stitch of the basic crystal wave crochet stitch.
What size is this Baby Blanket
Chain your length required (FINAL number must be divisible by 4)
For this example, I am going to make my blanket 124 ch which gives me a measurement of 34 inches WIDTH
Height = Im just o keep going until I feel the blanket Looks right and in proportion to the whole blanket when laid flat, I do this often when making crochet blankets.
Because some stitches are more textured and suit a bit longer than the suggested length OR some stitches are shorted resulting in a strange finish.
I am NOT sure how I am even going to finish this blanket, as I think a border MAY not suit the type of texture it is.
That is what I love about Crochet, you can swap and change your patterns as you like to get a finish YOU are happy with
Here are some of my Favorite all time crochet borders are :
Your chain length at the start = width you wish your blanket to be and can be divided by 4
Height = To be of your own choosing.
YARN - 2 strands of King Cole Big Value Baby Worked together
The HOOK I used for the baby blanket in BLUE = 4.50 mm
If your First row is curling in on itself GO UP AN Extra couple of hook sizes to create the chain. OR chain extremely LOOSLEY
ROW 1: Ch124, LOOSLEY to start 2 Dc into the 4th chain from the hook, work 2 Dc into the SAME chain space, Skp 3 Ch sts, Sc into the next chain. Ch3, 3Dc into the SAME space as the Sc, *Skip 3 ch sts, Sc into the next ch st, Ch3, 3 Dc in the same chain stitch as the Sc* Repeat from * to * until you reach the end of the chain. skip the last 3sts, For the LAST st of the ROW, SC into the TOP of the CH3 from the previous row. TURN
ROW 2: Ch 3, 2DC into the base of the chain 3 (counts as first of the 3dc sts) *Front POST single Crochet around the third along from the DC group from the previous rows set of 3DC’s, Ch3, work 3DC’s INTO the ch3 from the previous row*.
Repeat from * to * until you reach the end of the row.
At the end, SC into the TOP of the CH3 from the previous row. Ch 3, TURN.
Repeat Row 2 until you reach your desired length.
Fasten off and weave in ENDS.
As you can see by the picture BELOW I have NOT finished my Blanket with a crochet border!
