And they can be quite holey and thus useless at keeping the wind from our ears.

The Balaclava has been Tested against the Winds from the most Northernly point in Scotland.
It is shaped to fit your head and face But can be pulled up to cover the mouth if required.
I can safely say the crochet balaclavas are perfect for keeping heads cozy and warm.

4.50mm hook
To Start The balaclava
NECK RIBBING :
Chain 20, (19 sts, + 1st)
Row 1: In the 2nd chain from the hook, sc in each chain, ch 1 TURN (20)
Row 2: BLSc in each stitch, Cha1, TURN (20)
Row 3 to Row 54: BLSc in each stitch, Ch1, TURN (20)
Sew 2 Seams together using slip stitch into back loops to make a neck Tube to be able to start the balaclava main part.
Balaclava Headpiece:
Row 1: ch2, and working into the SIDE POSTS of the Stitches of the ribbing, work HDC evenly around, slip to first st to join (56 sts)
Row 2: HDC evenly around, slip to first st to join (56 sts)

Use Aran Weight and a 5.00 hook (I crochet extremely loosely so please adjust hook size if necessary

START with Crocheting the Ribbed Neck of the Balaclava
Chain 22 +1, 23ch to start
Row1: Back LoopSc in each stitch, TURN (21sts) This should measure at least 6 inches for the Neck ribbing (DO NOT pull the crochet to measure)
Row 2 to Row 66: ch1 Blsc in each st, Ch1 TURN, DO NOT FASTEN OFF Fold the long piece until the 2 shorter seams are touching and Slip St along, working into both sides to join, to make a Tube.
