For the Large Petal crochet sunflower I used a  Hook of 4.00mm I used Double knit yarn *(af) for the center and flower petals,  however, I think nice thick wool would work just as well.

If you are using a thinner yarn the ends of the petals WILL turn up so you will probably need to pin down and spray the leaves (I use hairspray) If putting them onto a canvas (without a protective layergoing over the top)  I will use spray starch to keep the petals flat.

How to Crochet a sunflower

Start the SUNFlower Center In Brown Yarn color

  1.  Ch2, Make 8 sc into the FIRST chain on the hook (8 SC)
  2.  2sc in each stitch around, slip to join, ch1, (16 SC)
  3. (*2 sc in next stitch, sc in next*) repeat * *, slip to join, ch1 (24SC)
  4.  (*2sc in next stitch, sc in next 2 sts* )repeat  * *,  slip to join  (32SC)
  5.  Sc in each stitch around
  6.  Fasten off. weave in ends.

How to crochet the SunFlower Petals

  1.  Join Yellow yarn color into any stitch from round 5
  2.  Chain 12
  3.  Slip stitch back into the 3rd chain from your hook, working back along the chain just made.
  4.  (*1sc, 1hdc, and DC into each of the next remaining chains until the last chain*),
  5.  skip 1 stitch from the last brown round and Slip stitch into the next stitch, (leaving 1 stitch between petals of the brown round)
  6. repeat step 2- 5for the rest of the petals.
  7. FINISH HERE for just 1 Layer of petals.
To continue the second round of Petals for the Sunflower
you will be working as before but INTO the skipped stitch of the FIRST layer of Petals. I fold the previous rounds' petals to the back so it is easier to work in the unworked single crochet sts.
  1. slip to the FIRST unworked skipped stitch of the last row of BROWN
  2. Chain 12,
  6. repeat step 2-  to Step 5 for the rest of the petals.
  7. FINISH OFF
You will need to block the crocheted sunflower or your leaves will curl up. I then spray liberally with hairspray and place it within the frame.
