If you wanted to crochet just a granny square Beanie Hat then follow these instructions but do NOT seam the sides of the squares when joining, just sew them together in slip stitch and omit the Brim.

How can you crochet a hat that fits You? Actually really easy to work out.
I have made this Granny Square bucket hat to fit 22 inches around
If you are making the diameter of the hat should measure about 7" at the crown
My favorite place to grab a good deal and Fast Delivery is over at Amazon
my estimated GAUGE:
3 sc = 1"
3 rows = 1".
I however am a very loose crocheter. (please adjust if necessary)
I used double knit weight yarn to crochet the granny squares,
then I used an ARAN BLACK yarn for the MAIN HAT
This is for a few reasons, I liked the feel of the double crochet granny squares for their lightness for summer wear but to get a good stable hat with a brim I went with an Aran weight.
I have chosen to start the squares with an easier method than the magic ring. To make granny squares you do not need to know how to crochet a magic ring.
How to crochet the Granny SQUARES: (Make 4)
You do not need to start the granny squares with a magic ring,
in Chosen color, and starting at the center,
ch 4. Working INTO the first chain you made create the whole of Round 1 in the same space.
Each corner will have (3dc, chain 3, 3dc)
There is NO chain spaces along the sides of the 3dc shells
you will work between these 2 sets of shell stitches
to create the NExt 3dc cluster.
Increasing 1 3dc cluster each side per round.
So If you want to make these bigger just keep
increasing 1 x 3dc cluster
NOTE: 3dc shell (3dc worked into same space)
Ch3 counts as first dc of first 3dc shell
Rnd 1: Ch 3, work 2 dc in the first chain you made.
(ch 3, 3-dc shell in the ring) 3 times,
join with slst to top of ch-3.
PULL tight to close and fasten in ends
Join to top of ch 3 to finish this round;
Break off yarn.
Rnd 2: Join new color
sl st in any ch 3 corner , ch 3,
in the same space work 2 dc, ch 3 and 3 dc (first corner),
* in next ch 3 space work *3dc, ch3, 3dc* * (second corner)
Repeat from * twice more;
Join with an slst to top of ch3 to finish this round
( 4 corner shells )
Rnd 3: Join the next color
SL st in any ch3 corner, work 2 dc, ch3, 3 dc (the first corner made),
*in next space between the shells of the corners work 3dc,
in next ch3 space make *3 dc, ch3, 3dc* (next corner made).
Repeat from * * around
Join with a slst to top of ch3 to finish this round.
( 4 corner shells and sides have 1 x 3dc shells)
Rnd 4: Join the next color
sl st in any ch-1 sp, ch 3, in the same sp work
2 dc, ch3, and 3 dc = first corner made ),
*3dc shell in next space, 3dcshell in next,
skip to next ch3 space and work
(3dc, ch 3, 3 dc = next corner made ).*
Repeat from * * around
Join with an slst to top of ch3 to finish this round
( 4 corner shells and sides have 2x 3dcshells)
Rnd 6: working in your chosen MAIN hat color)
join with slip stitch in any stitch along all 4 edges.
Work 3 sc in ch-1 corner sp,
work sc in each dc and ch-1 sp around,
working 3 sc in each remaining corner sp;
join with Sl st to first sc.
Break off.
Assembling the Squares.
Line up your finished granny squares in your preferred color choices, and we will attach the granny squares by holding 2 wrong SIDES together,
join by slip stitching along the side from one corner to the other.
Slip stitch along the seams ot join |
(this gives the hat more structure and a patchwork granny like effect)
Alternative: If you do not like the structured bucket hat look then simply hold the wrong sides together and sew the 4 granny squares into a long length side by sides
DO NOT complete the circle just yet! Leaving the LAST side unstitched to sew up later
I like to attach the Band of colorful Granny squares in a line first so as I can have some wiggle room to make sure it's attached to the Hats headpiece evenly.
We will sew the LAST sides together once we have attached to the crown.
How to crochet the TOP OF CROWN for the bucket Hat:
Starting at the top,
Do NOT join Rounds
ch 2.

Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around (14 sc).
