Crochet a Granny Square Balaclava.  This is a free Written Crochet pattern for a Granny Square Balaclava.

I was thinking of lining this with some fleece but surprisingly the balaclava is really warm. 

You can wear the hood up or pushed down to create a lovely granny square cowl.

All color combinations, and the more the merrier.

I've been making granny square Hats and Granny Square Bags. 

I just love how they use up all my yarn stash that's been moved around the house, not quite enough for a whole project but enough to make several granny squares in alternating colors.

I like to draw inspiration from previous crochet Patterns I have made and when I made the Hooded Cowl crochet pattern. 

I knew I was onto something. Hoods and Cowls go perfectly together. 

When I finally published it fast became a favorite warm and cozy practical headwear.  

Especially up here in the North of Scotland where the cold winds cut right through you.

I called it the 'Coodie', get it Hooded Cowl aka the Coodie? 

And then years ago to go with an old article I wrote years ago about 'Scoodies' aka scarves with hoods.

The Hooded Cowl pattern construction is very straightforward and suitable for beginners at crochet.

The ribbing creates the cowl turtleneck and the hood part than can be used up or down.

 
The hooded cowl does as it says on the tin and keeps you warm.

I have been bombarded by friends and customers to make a few for the skiers this season! as it will make a fantastic balaclava esk, type ski hood as it is SO warm and cozy. 

And you can manipulate the sizes easily of the granny squares to make them big enough to fit over ski helmets.

One customer wanted a colorful bright 'you cannot miss out on the ski slopes' Granny Square balaclava that acted as a hood and with partial face covering.

I love adding some fun to my crochet so I set about designing to see if I could put together a Balaclava-type hooded cowl with a face covered in bright colors for a skier.

Let me introduce to you the Granny Square Balaclava. 

I would definitely wear this when skiing as it's so cool and hip. And my Husband could find me easily!

I made one for the customer as a one and once it was posted online and shared I had people keep asking me to make them one but due to my little hands begin so sore just now. 

So I'm not crocheting as much as I used to but  I have written down the Granny Square balaclava pattern and I published it here for you.

SO all you need to do is find someone who crochets to make it for you.

The Granny Square Balaclava is a VERY Easy Crochet Pattern to follow. It is very easy to assemble.

The granny square hooded cowl can be made in ANY colors, and use any size hook suitable for the yarn you choose.

The size of my granny square was 7.5 inches across. 

(5.5 inches across just measuring the Granny Square BEFORE adding the BLACK yarn).

However, I have received feedback that some people have wanted to ADD more rounds. 

Some people preferred a much tighter hooded cowl. 

So please make sure you adjust to fit your preferences I usually work in Double Knit yarn. 

I have a LOT of odd bits and bobs lying around just shouting out to be made into something so this is a fantastic stash-busting crochet project.

This is a Classic Granny Square Written Pattern - If you know how to make a granny square then we are working 4 rounds in Granny Stitch

4 rows of Granny Stitch Completed

Make 1 round in double crochet in each stitch IN the final finishing Colour I chose Black.

MAKE 8
BEGINNING: Ch 6 on hook and form a ring with 1 Sl st in first ch.

ROUND 1: ch 3, 2 dc in ch-ring, * ch 3, 3dc in ch-ring *, repeat from *-* a total of 3 times, and finish with ch 3 and 1Slst in 3rd ch from beg of round. Cut the yarn and change color. Turn piece.

 
ROUND 2: Work 3dc in first ch space, ch 3, 3dc in the same ch space (CORNER) * ch 1, 3 dc in next ch space, ch 3, 3 dc in the same ch space *, repeat from *-* a total of 3 times and finish with ch 1 and 1 Sl st in the first dc in beg of round. Cut the yarn and change the color. Turn piece.

ROUND 3: Work 3 dc in first ch-space, ch 1, * 3 dc in next ch space, (CORNER) , ch 3, 3 dc in the same ch-space, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch space, 1 ch *, repeat from *-* a total of 3 times, 3 dc in next ch space, ch 3, 3 dc in the same ch space, 1 ch and finish with 1 Sl st in the first dc in beg of round. Cut the yarn and change the color. Turn piece

ROUND 4: Work 3 dc in first ch-space, ch 1, * 3 dc in next ch space, ch 3, 3 dc in the same ch space, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch space, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch space, 1 ch *, repeat from *-* a total of 3 times, 3 dc in next ch space, ch 3, 3 dc in the same ch space, 1 ch and finish with 1 Sl st in the first dc in beg of round. Cut the yarn

.ROUND 5: Join in any previous rounds of double crochet st, with Black yarn, Chain 3 (counts as first dc, Work dc in each stitch along the first side. at the corners, Work a (Dc, ch2, Dc) into the ch space corner. Continue working AROUND the square and fasten off by slip st into the top of the chain 3.

MAKE 7 MORE squares. as above how to Sew the Granny Squares to make the Hooded Cowl
Lay 4 Squares out and sew them together side to side

2. Connect 3 more Squares Dead center of the bottom 4 (SEE PIC BELOW)
ensuring you are happy with the colors at the SIDES as these will sit at the side of your face

3. 2 x SIDE panels and 1 BACK Panel + 4 for the cowl part

With the LAST remaining Square Place directly in the middle of the previous 3 as shown below,

This Square will sit at the TOP of your head





4. continue to JOIN THE Granny Squares as set out below




5. Sew The Seams together as shown below




6. and STARTING at the Bottom 4 ROW

Fold the bottom right side SEAM to meet the LEFT , and SEW this together making a circle.


You will now have made your Balaclava Hood with Face covering.

THE GRANNY SQUARE CROCHET PATTERN

• Suggested Hook size: 5 mm / H / 8
• Suggested Yarn: Double Knit Yarn (2 STRANDs worked together )
• The pattern is written in US terms

NOTE: ALWAYS Start by Joining the yarn and chain 3 to start which counts as the FIRST double crochet of the 3dc clusters to start)

And finally, weave in all ends and WEAR

If you would prefer a more snug fitting granny sqaure balaclava You can ALSO use the FREE balaclava Pattern HERE If you want the granny Square balaclava to have a RIBBED neck and face edging making it a snugger fit. 

Yu can use any squares you wish as long as you make sure the sizes of the squares is as you require
