I love this little crochet baby hat because it has a stretchy finish to the border,
meaning it can fit for a few weeks after birth too
I made a little grey matching set for my grandson and we found this a fantastic fit when he was a newborn baby. I added to small double pom-poms and it was so blooming cuteeeee.

What you will need TO crochet a Baby Hat: 

•  25grams of Double Knit yarn and for a Newborn
•  I used a 4.00mm hook
• (HOWEVER, you may need to go UP a size to achieve the SAME tension as
•  I am an Extremely loose crocheter. 

(Gauge Guide) 9 Dc  stitches = 2 inches across

SIZE: Hat for a Newborn

Hat Circumference will be 13 inches

Crown Diameter = 4 inches

Hat Length = 5.5 inches 

The pattern is written in US terms 

Do not be intimidated by the Front Post Double Crochet stitches. It really is an easy crochet stitch to master It is just a double crochet stitch but worked INTO a different place than normal double crochet, you will work around the Posts of the previous round. 

HOW TO FRONT POST DOUBLE CROCHET  - Yarn OVER, insert your hook around the BACK  of the previous rounds Double crochet Post, and continue to finish the double crochet stitch

How to BACK POST DOUBLE CROCHET - Yarn OVER, insert your hook around the BACK  of the previous rounds Double crochet Post, and continue to finish the double crochet stitch 

Dc = Double Crochet 

FPDc = Front post-Doube Crochet,

BPDc = Back Post Double Crochet, 

Starting Chain will NOT count as a stitch, But you will Work the FIRST stitches of round INTO the BASE of the Chain.

 you will Slip to join into the Starting chain to join rounds

THE BABY HAT CROCHET PATTERN STARTS HERE 

Chain 3 to start

Round 1:  

work 13 Double Crochet (Dc)stitches INTO the FIRST chain from the hook, slip to join, 

(13sts) 

Round 2: Ch2, 2Dc in each stitch around, slip to join, (26sts)

Round 3:  Ch2, (Dc, 2Dcin next st) Repeat ( ) Around, slip to join (39sts) 

Round 4: Ch2, (Dc in next 2,  2Dc in nxt ) Repeat ( ) Around, slip to join ( 52sts)  

Round 5 to Round 8: 

Ch2, Dc in each stitch around, slip to join, ch2. (52sts) 

Round 9 To Round 12: Chain 2 (will not count as stitch but you will slip to join to the top of the chain at end of round)

(FPDc in next stitch, Back Post Double Crochet in next st) Repeat around, Slip to join 

NOTE: Hat Height at mid-ear will equal approx 5 inches in length

(However, if you feel you wish a deeper hat for maybe a suspected larger baby

 you can finish with one extra Round @ Round 12 will measure approx 5.5  inches  

Simple Crochet Bow to Finish off the Baby Hat

Chain 5: Work 5 triple crochet into the 1st chain you made.

Chain 4: sl st into the first ch, Chain 6, skip slip stitch back along the chain

Chain 6: skip 1st ch, and slip stitch back along the chain, Chain 4,

work 5 triple crochet, into the middle, ch4 sl stitch to finish.

Crochet small Pom Poms for the hat I love finishing off the hat with Double pom poms and add them on to the booties if you crochet a pair to match the hat. 

I'm old school when making my pom-poms and use the traditional method of winding the yarn around cardboard circles
