The Ridged crochet baby crochet hat is made side to side, which means there is a lot more stretchy and a lot of giving, than some of the baby hats crocheted in the round.
I initially made this little hat whilst awaiting the arrival of my grandson, my daughter had gone into labour early but then we ended waiting on him to appear. So I was playing about with the stitches.
For this pattern, I am going to call the stitch half double crochet worked into the 3rd front-facing diagonal stitch loop at the front of our work = HDC3rd loop
we are going to work
Half Double Crochet worked into the 3rd front-facing diagonal stitch loop at the front of our work for each ROW
This is NOT the camel stitch, this way of working shows a knit look ridge on both sides.
Working HDC3rd loop for this pattern creates nearly an identical look to knit 1, purl 2
It’s a great crochet stitch for hats that you want to make with a brim as the pattern carries on both sides
This means we will be working in the Slanting stitch of the HDC on each side when we turn and work faces us which produces this knit and purl look crocheted ribbed texture.
Until you are familiar with where to place your hook i find it easier to identify the diagonal loop before starting each row.
HDC3rd loop - half double crochet worked into the 3rd front-facing diagonal stitch loop at the front of your work
Crochet Baby HAT pattern

Row 3. extHdc in each stitch until last 4 sts, blslst to end, ch1, TURN
Continue repeating rows 2 and rows 3 until work measures 13 inches across
To finish Fold the hat side to side and sew the seam together.
Using your yarn needle pick up loops around the top at the slip stitches and pull tight to join
You can add a Pom Pom (BUY POM POM MAKER HERE*) or like I have done here some easy crochet spirals
I made 5 crochet spirals by
Ch 20, working 3sc into each stitch of the chain.
Fasten off and weave in end leaning 1 length to attach to the hat at the very Center of where you pulled tight to finish
I just love how this little crochet hat and booties turned out. It was a special order for someone so I’m always nervous of a new pattern but it turned out everything the customer wanted and more.
