This hat will fit a  0-3 months size and is the Perfect Cosy Winter Crochet Hat with earflaps for a Baby! I've added extra hints to make it slightly bigger.

Tried and Tested by my own Grandson. One in Every Colour!

People are most surprised to find out it is a hand-crocheted baby hat, as the ribbed texture looks extremely fancy and hard to replicate.

But Believe me, it is actually a relatively easy crochet baby hat pattern. 

As long as you know how to crochet AROUND the stitches of the previous round in this case for this baby hat you will need to know how to FRONT post HALF Double crochet.

This crochet baby hat is also my MOST asked-for in crochet order,s and really IS my go-to favorite crochet hat pattern for a baby. I've made these hats for My grandson as he has grown

This ribbed crochet hat with ear flaps and a huge pom is perfect for 0-3 months. 

I first made my grandson this warm cozy ribbed hat with earflaps and a huge pom, when he was just a few weeks old as my daughter wanted a nice gray hat for a photo shoot. 

As you can see in The Grey one pictured above had 1 more row of sc back loops, but this made it just a little too big.

This Baby crochet hat with earflaps really was a firm favorite throughout the winter. Especially when crocheted in the Red yarn and white Pom Pom 

Olivers Baby hat was crocheted using the Half double crochet Stitch, (HDC) and to create the raised textured ribbing effect the HDC is worked AROUND the front of the post of the previous round (FPHDC).

Baby Hat Crochet Pattern with Earflaps Easy for Beginners 

Since posting the original picture of him in his crochet ribbed earflap hat.

I  have been asked several times for the baby hat crochet pattern, especially with ear flaps. 

And in between Grandmother duties, I finally got it written up.

This little crochet hat is most popular with orders and I love creating it with different colors to crochet a Baby set. 

Baby Hat Crochet Pattern with Earflaps FREE Pattern 
 0-3 months 

Yarn Used: Stylecraft Special for Babies Chunky (Please NOTE: I am a loose crocheter) you may need to go UP a hook size to achieve the correct measurements 

This is a chunkier version of the style craft for babies DK range  You can BUY THIS YARN HERE YARN Stylecraft Special for Babies Chunky*)  I have also used 2 strands of Double Knit together

Earflap Hat SIZE: Newborn 0 + 3 months 

5.00mm hook  (please note some mums do not want the ties just the Hat with earflap covers)  (Just omit the chain length) 

The hat diameter at the crown (flat circle diameter)  using a 5.00 should measure 4 inches and if you are crocheting a baby hat to fit  nearer 3 months The flat circle diameter should measure -  4.45"

Hat length Before Earflaps 5.25'' if making for 3 months approx 5.75"
Finished hat circumference = 15 inches around

Gauge: 10 sts= 4 inches

NOTES: If you are making for For a baby nearer 3 months I suggest using a 5.50mm or a 6.00mm hook and hat will =16 inches around

SPECIAL NOTE: How to create the textured Front Post HALF Double Crochet stitch 

When working this Front post HDC stitch you will work around the post of the previous rounds stitch POST of the previous row. 

FPHDC is worked by, yarn over, inserting the hook around the front post of previous rounds post of stitch, Pull Up the loop to the height of the previous hdc stitch, (3 loops on hook) Yarn over and pulling through ALL to finish.

Abbreviations  (Written in US terms)

Ch – chain
HDC – Half Double Crochet
Sc – single crochet

FPHDC - working Half double crochet around the FRONT of the post of the previous round
Special instructions:
Round 3: you will increase in EVERY stitch by working 1 HDC into the connecting bar to the next stitch
and then FPHDC AROUND the POST of the Stitch ) See Pic 

PATTERN STARTS HERE - Olivers Crochet Baby Hat With Earflaps

Rnd 1: Magic Ring, ch2, hdc 11, pull ring tight, join to top ch of ch 2. (11)
Rnd 2: Ch 2, Work 2Hdc each Hdc around. Join to top ch of ch 2. (22)
Rnd 3: Ch 2. Work an FPHDC around the Previous rounds HDC,
*HDC INTO the connecting bar of the next stitch, HDC around Front POST of previous rounds HDC* repeats from * to * around. Slip to Join to top of ch 2. (44)

Round 4 to Round 13: Ch 2, *FPHDC around previous rounds FPHDC, HDC into next st* Repeat around. or continue until Hat length from the crown (Before Earflaps) measures  5.25'' if making for 3 months 5.5"

NOTE for 3 months:
Continue working 1 more Round in an established pattern.
Ch1, SC in BACKLOOPS only Around Slip to join.

Do not Fasten off and continue working the first earflap. 

HOW to Crochet the Earflaps for the Baby Hat

Row1:ch1,1sc in same st as ch1, 1sc in next 7 sts, turn. (7)
Row2: ch1,skip first st, 1sc in nxt 6sts, turn
Row3: ch1, skip first st, 1sc in nxt 5sts, turn
Row4: ch1, skip first st, 1sc in nxt 4sts, turn
Row5: ch1, skip first st, 1sc in nxt 3sts, turn
Row6: ch1, skip first st, 1sc in nxt 2sts, turn
Row7: ch1, skip first st, 1sc in nxt st, Fasten off.

2nd Earflap

With the back of the hat facing you count 14 sts away from the first st of the earflap, (FRONT IS these 14 sts)
Rejoin yarn IN the 15 th st and rep as for the first earflap.
Do Not Fasten off

Finishing Border. And adding the Crochet Braids to the earflaps 
Make sure you are working with the Right Side towards you, and continue working sc up and down the sides of the earflaps. 
Back loops single crochet along the front and back stitches until you reach the LAST stitch of the earflap
Working INTO the last stitch made of the earflap

Make (sc, chain 25, slip stitch back up the chain just made, and sc back into the last stitch of earflap,) continue working in sc to next earflap and repeat ( ) sc to first st
Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Create a Pom pom and tie it securely.
this is my GO-TO favorite way to make a thick fluffy pom out of Yarn
