This Newborn Crocheted Baby Hat - FREE Pattern by LisaAuch Crochet.

Ribbed knit look Baby hats are so easy to crochet.

Once I have a little collection of a few crochet baby hats in varying hats are also brilliant yarn stash buster projects too!

I will then look for a hospital or Charity that is taking baby hats for their maternity ward.

Look out for a post on Facebook requesting newborn baby hats!

Newborn Babies can lose heat really quickly straight after birth.

Babies require warm hats immediately to help keep them warm and cozy

If they lose heat too quickly after being born, they can become quite unwell.

Please check with your local maternity unit on what colors they may need.

Some units run a traffic light system Red, Amber, and green hats are used as a visual aid.

The midwives can then easily identify immediately babies that are in need of little more help and attention in the first few hours.

RED - red hats are used for babies who are more at risk and require more regular observations.

AMBER hats - require just a little bit more attention.

GREEN Hats - lower-risk babies and only require routine observations as they are healthy and a good weight.

(Please check with the labor Delivery suite midwives if donations are being taken at this time.

If your local hospital is not taking donations at this time do not worry there is always a charity or other hospital requiring hats. so just keep making!

How much Yarn do you need to crochet a baby hat, I like to work this baby hat in double knit yarn.

I love crocheting the baby hats as I can make several from 1 ball of yarn.

I used 30grms double knit yarn per hat. I can make 3 hats per £100g ball and that works out at 0.76p per hat.

Once I have enough, I then donate the crocheted baby hats to either the local hospital or a charity.
I like to keep a box ongoing, and when there is an urgent request. I have a few ready to go.

I have several crocheted and knitted baby hats to go at one time.
That I can wrap up and send to the labor suite of the hospital when they are needing them.

I have 2 very easy free knitting patterns for a baby hat made on 2 straight needles.

What size Do baby hats need to be for the hospitals?

As a guide, the average newborn head circumference is between 13- 15 inches!
But recommended hat circumference is 12 inches around.

The ribbing makes this a lovely stretchy hat.
For this hat, we will crochet in Rows until our HAT measures 12 inches across.

The depth of the hat once on the head Must be at least 5 inches. (without the turnup)

You  will add on extra chains at the beginning of the hat depending on how wide you wish the turn up to be!

I prefer quite a deep turnup for this baby hat.

Crocheting a baby's hat it's NOT an accurate science. As all baby's heads are different sizes.

We can help make our little hats fit as best we can for those crucial first 24 hours where keeping the heat in the body is a must.

What makes THIS one of the best newborn baby hat patterns and why it is so great for donating to hospitals for several reasons.

  • The BRIM is folded upwards to sit just above the baby's eyebrows.

With many 'beanie type' hats we are kinda judging the length required as not every baby comes out the same, so crocheting a baby hat with a fold-up brim is great.

  • The bottom Edging of the hat is lovely and elastic, meaning it can adjust to fit a few sizes.

And finally,

  • The Crochet stitches used to make this baby hat is slip stitches into the Back Loops, Single Crochet Crocheting into The Back loop making a ribbed stretchy baby hat.

This is one of the most asked-for crochet baby hats.
I get asked to make and also sell really well as part of newborn hats and booties crochet sets I make.

If you are new to crocheting and want to know How to crochet a baby hat 0-3 months for beginners, this is a fantastic baby crochet hat pattern to start with.

It is worked in ROWS and uses the first 2 simple crochet stitches of slip stitch into the back loop, and single crochet into the back loops.
