Cute Easy Quick Newborn Baby Bear Hat Pattern (FREE)

My daughter asked me to crochet my grandson a little newborn baby hat with cute bear ears.  

I used a simple beanie style pattern, finished in the last couple of rows in the Back loop. 

This was to match the Long-Sleeved Newborn baby cardigan and newborn booties I had just made

I love this newborn baby hat pattern as it works up so easily and always gets so many compliments, and orders, these are also great newborn hats to donate to hospitals. 

It is a Perfect last-minute crochet gift idea for Baby Showers. 

And it only takes  a little amount of yarn, (less than half of a 50g ball of Aran weight yarn 

NEWBORN BABY CROCHET HAT PATTERN 

Size: Newborn

Materials:

I used Stylecraft Aran

Size 4.50mm crochet hook. TO achieve Size. 

You MAY need to go up a hook as I am a very loose crocheter

Yarn needle

Abbreviations:

ch = chain

sl st = slip stitch

sc = single crochet

HDC= half double crochet

dc = double crochet

TO Start. 

Round 1:  Ch 4, work 12 dc into the  4th chain from hook. Sl st to top of ch 3 to join. (12)
Round 2:  Ch 3, work 2 dc in the BASE of ch 3, *2 dc in each stitch around. Sl st to top of ch 3 to join. (24) total

Round 3:  Ch 3, 2 dc in the BASE OF the ch 3, 1 dc in next stitch, *2 dc in next stitch, 1 dc in following stitch* repeat from * to * around join with a sl st to top of ch 3. (36)

Rounds 4 - 8:  Ch 3, dc in base of ch3, dc in each stitch around. Sl st to top of ch 3 to join. (36)

Round 9:  Ch 1, sc in next stitch and in each stitch around. Sl st to top of ch 1 to join. (36)

Round 10 - 11:  Ch 1, sc in back loop of next stitch and in the back loop of each stitch around.  Sl st to top of ch 1 to join. (36).  Fasten off.

Ears (Make 2)

FOR LARGE FLAT ears (GREY BABY HAT) 

Round 1:  Ch 3, 12 HDC in 3rd ch from hook. Sl st to top of ch 3 to join.  (12)

Round 2:  Ch 2, HDC in the same stitch as ch 2, 2 HDC in next stitch and in each stitch around. (24)

Round 3:  Ch 2, HDC in the same stitch as ch 2, 1 HDC in next stitch, *2 HDC in next stitch, 1 HDC in following stitch*  repeat from * to * around and join with a sl st to top of ch 2.  (36)

 

Fold the circle in half with RS showing 

Join yarn with a slip st through both sides and continue working along the outer side of the half-circle to close.  Sl st and fasten off when you reach the corner of the ear leaving a long enough tail to sew ear to hat.

Position ears and sew.

For Small Rounded EARS (Cream Baby HAT) MAKE 2 

Round 1:  Ch 3, 12 HDC in 3rd ch from hook. Sl st to top of ch 3 to join.  (12)

Round 2:  Ch 2, HDC in the same stitch as ch 2, 2 HDC in next stitch and in each stitch around. (24)

ROW  3: Fold circle in half with Right side showing. 

Single crochet around the outer edges joining the 2 sides together , sc to LAST stitch (12) 

JOIN LAST  st, to FIRST sc of Row, fasten off and leave a long tail to join to hat. 

Fasten off and weave in all ends.
