I came across a pattern for a baby blanket using the "star stitch" not only had I never heard of this crochet stitch before, but I had never tried it. SO I taught myself a new stitch.
The Star Stich Baby blanket Pattern by LisaAuch Crochet
I call this the Easy Star Stitch Stripey Blanket The perfect for a baby cot blanket, lapghan or snuggle blanket. (Very Warm No whole baby Blanket )
The star stitch is also known (as I have since found out and hence probably why I haven't heard of it before) the Margarite stitch, daisy stitch, and star stitch. Very easy to pick up and not only makes a beautiful stitch and pattern, but it is also a lovely to work,
especially in nice thick Aran Yarn. I loved how easily it worked up, and changing colors on the stripes was effortless and give such a beautiful finish. Making it an ideal one-colored or multi-colored stitch to use.
I made a lapghan for my Uncle. Changing colors in every row with one cream in between.
The star stitch is in multiples of two +3
So I would chain 103 to start

Chain 22
Row 1. Skip 1st ch, Draw up a loop in each of the next 5 chains. Yarn over and PULL through all 6 loops on the hook (1st STAR MADE), Yaron over and pull through to FINISH the stitch (This is called the EYE of the stitch),
**Working INTO the EYE of the stitch, insert hook through EYE, YO and draw a loop through (2 loops on Hook)
Insert your hook into the last FRONT loop of the star just made. YO and draw a loop through (3 loops on hook )
Insert your hook into the same space where the last loop of the previous star was made, (4 loops on hook)
Yarn Over draw a loop through the next chain, (5 Loops on hook)
Yarn Over and Draw a loop through the Next chain (6 LOOPS on hook)
Yarn over and draw through ALL 6 loops on the hook. Yarn over and Pull the loop through close. ** Repeat from ** to ** at the end of the row. Chain 1, TURN (this sampler will have 9 Stars)
Row 2: 2 sc into the EYE of the last rows star, (ch counts as 1st sc), 2sc in the next eye of the previous star made, continue working in this manner to end. work 1 sc into the eye of the LAST st, and sc into the TOP of ch at the start, TURN
Ch4 Repeat rows 1 and 2
NOTE** You can replace the single crochet with Half double crochet, just remember to compensate for this change with a ch 2
There does seem to be some variations of the stitch, some books I read say to hdc into the eye of the previous rows star. I preferred working the single crochet along.
Easy Crochet Blanket Pattern (Star Stitch BABY BLANKET )
I started with ch 163, on the second row I completed 1 row of single crochet.
I used a 4.5mm (UK) hook (OR use recommended yarn to hook as directed on yarn ball. )
The pattern is in US terms.
I used several ends and colors of Aran Yarn. Chain 163
Row1: (Colored Yarn): Star Stitch to the end, draw a loop through the last eye and in the last chain (from the last star), ch 1, turn.
Row 2: 2sc in the eye of previous rows star, repeat to the last stitch. ch 2, turn Fasten off color. and leave the tail for weaving
Row 3: (Cream ) Star Stitch to the end, draw a loop through the last eye and in the last chain (from the last star), ch 1, turn.
Row 4: (cream) 2sc in the eye of previous rows star, repeat to the last stitch. ch 2, turn to Fasten off color. and leave the tail for weaving Continue working in the sequence and pattern as above until your preferred length is required. until you have 62 rows, or the Measurement you desire ending with row 2. Fasten off. Weave in all the loose ends, neatly.
Blanket Border. Join chosen color of yarn for the border and work
Rnd 1: sc in each stitch to the corner, 3 sc in the corner, sc across to the next corner, 3 sc in the corner, sc across to the next corner – make sure you go through each chain. 3 sc in corner, sc across to next corner. 3 sc in the corner. You can make the Border as wide as you wish Fasten off and Weave in ends.
