Easy Baby Blanket and Baby Hat Set {Free Crochet Pattern}

My friends have just had baby Boys! and I was looking for a nice crochet baby blanket pattern and a matching crochet hat set. 

To make as a gift, I found lots of beautiful girly ones, but I struggled to find boyish blankets.

I wanted to make sure that it was cosy but also looked modern for them. 

I love how easily this stitch works up using easy crochet stitch 

combinations of  (SK 1 single crochet, 2 single crochet in next sc}  

It also gives the blanket a cosy texture.

I used a wool Arran, with cotton mix

(I was given the wool so I am unsure of its actual make.)

However, I would say it's Arran /worsted weight. If you are using lighter wool make sure you follow the size guidelines. And I would recommend lining it, with cosy fleece.

I used a very soft cotton wool mix blend Aran (worsted weight)

And a 4.00mm hook

Gauge on a blanket with a pattern stitch is not so important. I go by measurements. 

 IF you have not been given measurements then a good rule of thumb for making a pram cover or blanket is

Recommended Baby Pram cover or Blanket size

 W75cm x L100cm - 30 inches x 39 inches .

Crochet Blanket Pattern   

Ch 101 Loosely.  (or until the desired width is achieved)

Row 1:  2 sc in 3rd ch from hook. (Sk next ch, 2 sc in next ch) across to end,  turn — 100 sts.

Row 2: Ch 1, sk first sc, 2 sc in next sc (sk 1 sc, 2 sc in next sc) across to end,  turn — 100 sts.

Repeat Row 2 until the blanket is 30 inches. (or desired length)

Crochet BORDER pattern for the Blanket Edging: 

Round 1: Ch 1, dc in each dc across to end of row,  

work 3 dc in  last stitch {corner turn) dc evenly across left edge. 

3 dc in last stitch {corner turn}
Dc in bottom loop of each ch across to end, 3 sc in last loop {corner}

Dc evenly across last edge to end, 3 more dc in the last sp; 

join with sl st to the first dc of rnd  {corner}

Rd 2: Ch 4 (counts as first dc and ch-1 sp). (Sk 1 sc, 5dc in next sc, ch 1) across to corner.
(2Dc in same sc, ch 1) 2 times more (corner turned). 

Repeat around for the next three sides of the blanket, 

only repeating last (dc in same sc, ch1) one time in the last corner.
Join with sl st to 3 rd ch of 1 st ch-4.

 Fasten off.
To finish,  you can weave a ribbon of your chosen colour through the Dc round of blanket edge.

Easy Crochet Hat Pattern with Pom Pom

Using the same yarn and 4.0mm UK hook, 

the hat is worked in Half Double Crochet, this gives a good bit of stretch in the stitch and makes for an excellent baby hat.

abbreviations:
sl st to join = slip stitch to join
hdc= Half Double Crochet
FP HDC- Working hdc around the front post of the previous rounds hdc {this creates the ribbed effect for the brim}

Easy Crochet Hat Pattern

Round 1:

Magic Circle 10 hdc and pull to tighten slip stitch to join

 OR { chain 5 slip stitch into first chain to create a circle and work 10 hdc, slip stitch to join. chain 2 

Rnd 2: {2hdc in each stitch around} Repeat {} around, (increase made in every stitch around) slip stitch to join Chain 2

Rnd 3: {1 hdc, 2hdc in next stitch} Repeat {} around  (increase made in every 2nd sttich around)slip stitch to join Ch2:

Rnd 4:  {work hdc in next 2 stitches. 2hdc in next stitch}  Repeat {} around  (increase made in every 3rd stitch around) slip stitch to join, ch2

Rnd 5: {work hdc in next 3 Stitches,  2hdc in next stitch}   Repeat {} around  ( Increase mad ein every 4th stitch around) slip stitch to join, ch2

Rnd 6- 12 hdc around, slp st to join, chain2. 

Rnd 12-15: 

(Working in front and back posts alternatively of previous round ) 

{1 front post hdc, 1 back post hdc}  repeat around to create the ribbing. slip to join, chain 2.
 Fasten off and weave in ends.
