Free Crochet Pattern Baby Cardigan

This crochet cardigan for 0-3 months baby, is worked in half double crochet and made from the neck down, the simple pattern makes it great for even beginners, it really is so simple as  it can be made very quickly.

I like using a double knit yarn and a 4.5mm hook
Finished Chest measurement = 16 inches around.


Crochet Baby Sweater Pattern
Materials:
About 2 x 50g of double knit yarn (light worsted / 3) And some contrasting colour if desired.
Size 4.50mm hook or G hook
3hdcs = work 3 hdc into the stitch indicated

Note: In this pattern the ch 2 at the beginning of the row DOES NOT count as the first hdc.
You will work your first hdc in the bottom of the chain2 , and when working the last stitch at the end of the row you will work into that hdc, not into the ch 2.
This will give you a straighter edge and a no gaps from the turning chain.


Starting at neck edge, ch 38

Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across. (36 hdc)

Row 2: Ch 2,  hdc in first 4 hdc, work 3hdc in next hdc, (8 hdc, 3hdc in next hdc, 8 hdc, 3hdc in next hdc, 8 hdc, 3hdc in next hdc, 4 hdc) across; turn. (32 hdc, 4 x3hdcs )

Row 3: Ch 2, hdc in next 5 hdc, work 3hdc in next hdc, (10 hdc, work 3hdc in next hdc, 10 hdc, work 3hdc in next hdc, 10 hdc, work 3hdc in next hdc, 5 hdc) across; turn. (40 hdc, 4 x3hdcs)

Row 4: Ch 2, hdc in next 6 hdc, work 3hdc in next hdc, (12 hdc, work 3hdc in next hdc, 12 hdc, work 3hdc in next hdc, 12 hdc,work 3hdc in next hdc, 6 hdc) across; turn. (48 hdc, 4 x3hdcs)

Rows 5: Ch 2, hdc in next 7 hdc, work 3hdc in next hdc, (14 hdc, work 3hdc in next hdc, 14 hdc, work 3hdc in next hdc, 14 hdc, work 3hdc in next hdc, 7 hdc) across; turn. (56 hdc, 4 x3hdcs)

Row 6: Ch 2, hdc in next 8 hdc, work 3hdc in next hdc, (16 hdc, work 3hdc in next hdc, 16 hdc, work 3hdc in next hdc, 16 hdc, work 3hdc in next hdc, 8 hdc) across; turn. (64 hdc, 4 x3hdcs)

Row 7: Ch 2, hdc in next 9 hdc, work 3hdc in next hdc, (18 hdc, work 3hdc in next hdc, 18 hdc, work 3hdc in next hdc, 18 hdc, work 3hdc in next hdc, 9 hdc) across; turn. (72 hdc, 4 x3hdcs)

Row 8: Ch 2, hdc in next 10 hdc, work 3hdc in next hdc, (20 hdc, work 3hdc in next hdc, 20 hdc, work 3hdc in next hdc, 20 hdc, work 3hdc in next hdc, 10 hdc) across; turn. (80 hdc, 4 x3hdcs)

Row 10:  Ch 2, hdc in next 12 hdc, work 3hdc in next hdc, (24 hdc, work 3hdc in next hdc, 24 hdc, work 3hdc in next hdc, 24 hdc, work 3hdc in next hdc, 12 hdc) across; turn. (96 hdc, 4 x3hdcs)

Row 11: This row will form the armholes.

Ch 2, hdc in next 14 sts, skip next 27sts, hdc in next 22sts, skip next 27 sts, hdc in next 14sts. turn

Row 12: ch 2, hdc in each stitch across  (54sts)

Row 13 - 23 For the remainder of the sweater continue working in hdc across each row or switch to any stitch you prefer and work that until the sweater is the length you want it to be.

Sleeves:
Row 1: Join to underarm, ch 2 and work 28 hdc around, TURN
Row 2-5: Ch 2, hdc around, TURN,
Row 6: Ch 2, , 2hdc together, hdc to end, TURN,
Row7-10: Ch 2, 2hdc together, hdc to end, cut yarn leaving enough to sew the sleeve seam together.
(change colour here, and now work in rounds)
Rnd: Ch 2, 2hdc together, hdc to last 2 stitches 2hdc together, slip to join to top of ch2
Row 12: Ch 2, 2hdc together, hdc to last 2 stitches 2hdc together, slip to join to top of ch2
Repeat for other sleeve.

Finishing:
Using same yarn or contrasting color, join at bottom of sweater, ch 1 and sc around sweater, working 3 sc at end of each side of neck and each side of bottom.
Fasten off and weave in All ends ends.
