After the popular post Crochet Baby hat Patterns I decided to try to make it. See how I did further down the page!
This cute little number was inspired by a crochet baby hat I saw, When I saw this cute little crochet baby beanie I knew I just had to work it out! it will be a really great pattern for any size, just keep increasing the clusters row by row until desired size/circumference of head is achieved.
I used hook size UK 4.00mm and Dk baby yarn.
Stitches used in this pattern and Abbreviations:
Ch - chain
Dc - double crochet
YO - yarn over
Sl st - slip stitch
Tc - treble (or triple) crochet
Stitch:
how to make a cluster
Make a dc within one step of finishing (2 loops left on hook)
repeat (3 loops left on hook)
repeat (4 loops left on hook)
Yarn Over, pull through all 4 loops on hook.
A great video to watch on how to do this can be found here -
how to make the 3 versions of a cluster stitch watch after 2mins for the version required for this hat.
***how to make the 1st round in photos using the magic circle technique: many have been struggling with this first round! I want to stress once you have gotten how to make the magic ring you will never go back!
However if you are really struggling create a ring to work into by Chain 5 slip st into 1st to creat ring and work round1 from:- Inside the ring, ch 3(counts as firts dc of cluster)
{cluster: Make a dc within one step of finishing (2 loops left on hook) Repeat (3 loops left on hook). YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook } chain2
*Cluster, ch 2. Repeat from * repeat a further 4 times. Pull ring tight.
Sl st to top ch of ch 3. Sl st in next st, sl st in ch-2 sp. (5 clusters)
Round 1: Magic Ring. Inside the ring, ch 3(counts as first dc of cluster)
{cluster: Make a dc within one step of finishing (2 loops left on hook) Repeat (3 loops left on hook). YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook } chain2 (PIC 1)
*Cluster, ch 2. Repeat from * repeat a further 4 times. Pull ring tight.
Sl st to top ch of ch 3. Sl st in next st, sl st in ch-2 sp. (5 clusters) (yes the photos above have only 4 clusters! I was making one for a preemie baby!)
Round 2: Ch 3. In ch-2 sp, make a dc within one step of finishing (2 loops left on hook). Repeat (3 loops left on hook) YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook. Ch 2
In same sp, {cluster} ch 2
*In the next ch-2 sp,{ cluster}
Repeat around in each ch-2 sp
Sl st to top ch of ch 3
sl st in ch-2 sp (10 clusters)
Round 3: Ch 3.(counts as 1st dc of cluster In *ch-2 sp, make a dc within one step of finishing (2 loops left on hook). Repeat (3 loops left on hook). YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook. Ch 2. In same sp, cluster, ch 2. (this creates 2 clusters in 1 space) In the next ch-2 sp, cluster, ch 2.(1 cluster in space)
In the next ch-2 sp, cluster, ch 2.(1 cluster in space) In next ch-2 sp, [cluster, ch 2; cluster, ch 2.]
Repeat around
(End on a single cluster in the sp.) Sl st to top ch of ch 3. Sl st in next st, sl st in ch-2 sp.
(15 clusters)

Round 4-6: Ch 3. Make a dc within one step of finishing (2 loops left on hook). Repeat (3 loops left on hook). YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook. Ch 2. *In the next ch-2 sp, Cluster, ch 2. Repeat from * in each ch-2 sp. Sl st to top ch of ch 3. Sl st in next st, sl st in ch-2 sp. (15 clusters)

working Into ring, ch2, sc9 (10 including the chain 2) sl st to join,
{chain3, dc, tr, dc, slip into sc of previous round} 1 petal made
continue {} around. 5 Petals.
Join, finish off with a long tail
***PLEASE NOTE: *****
I have used several crochet flower patterns on these photos, that can be found on my page
How to crochet a flower
How to crochet the Leaf for your Crochet flower
Leaves pattern:
Rnd 1: With green, ch 5, * 2 dc on 3rd ch from hook, ch 2, sl st on top of last dc made.
Dc on same st as previous dc. Ch 2, sl st on same st**, sl st on next 2 chs.
Ch 3, repeat from * to **. Cut off.
Sew leaves to the back of flower.
I use this long tail to attach the flowers together and then attach onto the beanie itself, on this beanie I made 3 flowers, the 2 larger ones, identical but each with bigger hooks. Crochet flowers are fun, once you have mastered the basic crochet flower, have fun experimenting with different wools/yarns sizes of hooks .

Hi Lisa, I used your pattern as one of my Lent hats this week! Thanks so much for sharing it. You can see my blog at http://sunflowersathome.blogspot.com/2012/03/lent-week-3-projects.html
ReplyDeleteIt is beautiful, and wasnt it so easy to make!
ReplyDeleteIt is beautiful! I'm VERY VERY new to crochet and I'm having a hard time figuring out at what point I'm supposed to go back through the loop... help?
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWuabsIZh_w watch the video at 2.09 seconds, for this version of the cluster stictch, hope it helps (p.s. good luck and stich with it, I learned how to crochet on youtube!!!)
DeleteWhat sized needle and weight of wool did you use?
ReplyDeleteI used hook size UK 4.00mm and Dk baby yarn hope that helps!
ReplyDeletethank you
ReplyDeleteIs there a video available to watch how to do this pattern?
ReplyDeleteOnly a video available on how to do the cluster stitch! I have embedded it now in the post above. Hope that helps :)
ReplyDeleteFor some reason I'm coming up short on the clusters in the first couple rnds. Should it read differently or am I doing something wrong? Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteHi amanda i have added a picture (sorry it was taken with a blackbery and uploaded so not the best, but will give you an idea of how the first 3 rounds should look! Hope it helps if not just shout if you need help again :)
ReplyDeleteThe cluster stitch is beautiful and really makes a stunning look for this little hat, I love that you can adjust the size and circumference just by adding or subtracting clusters. So adorable

DeleteHow did you do the leaf? Thks for the pattern-'the hat is adorable!
ReplyDeleteYou will find a great tutorial to crochet a leaf here
DeleteI was wondering if the flower patteren is the same one for the main pic. I did it and it much much smaller. It seems like there are alot more stitches in he petals on the pic?
ReplyDeleteNo not the main pic, I found it very large and too bulky for the hat to make it practical to wear, the pattern is for the smaller pictures at the bottom of the post :)
ReplyDelete(to achieve a larger flower, an easy way is
working in the loop created, chain however many stitches you want (side of your petal) if you want to chain 4 at the start of your petal then work into the next stitch 5 times, start by by yarn over x3, and work as a dc, down the stitches on the hook to finish 5 times over )
Hope this helps, however you can see more ideas for pretty flowers

I'm lost on the magic ring. All the how to's show you do a single crochet on the ring none show how to do a chain on the ring?
ReplyDeleteI followed this tutorial in the beginning

Magic Ring Tutorial
I am also having a hard time, even after watching the videos. I get how to start the Magic Ring, but I am still uncertain. If someone can post a picture of this part "Round 1: Magic Ring. Inside the ring, ch 3(counts as firts dc of cluster)" and then another picture after the first cluster, that would really help. This is only my second project so I'm learning as I go! Thanks!
DeleteWhat age is this pattern for ? I need one to fit a 9 mth plus age baby
ReplyDeleteFinished hat = measures 16cms (using hook3.mm)
Deleteto make slightly larget I used larger hook and thicker yarn.
it says you used a UK 4.00mm hook, so thats a UK #8 hook? US G/6 right? also do you have a recommended gauge swatch?
ReplyDelete-krochet-n-kel
uk 4.00mm (metric) hook = Us g/6 or uk/canadian = 8 :)
DeleteLove this pattern! I made it with a smaller hook (4.25 mm) and it fits my preemie perfect! I plan to use this pattern over and over as my little girl grows. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteAngie! thats wonderful, and thankyou for sharing!
DeleteI'm having problems when I start a new row. Do I use the chain of three as part of my first cluster or at the end of a row? When I use it at the end do I still slip stitch in the top of the 3rd chain loop? Thank you for your help!
ReplyDeleteYes use the top of the chain 3
ReplyDeleteI want to make this hat for a 2 and 4 year old. Do I only need to use a larger hook or does the whole pattern change?
ReplyDeleteThe whole pattern you would need to add more increase rounds of clusters, use a thicker yarn and a larger hook!
DeleteUmm... not sure what I did wrong, but mine turned out extra small- like small small- too small for a preemie, I'm thinking. It'll fit my daughter's doll. I used us g/8 hook and a light (3) yarn- Red Heart Baby TLC. Is my yard just not thick enough? Are my stitches just waaaay too tight? I'm a very very new beginner- this is the second thing I've made and it took me a bit to work out the clusters, but I'm confident I'm doing them right- looks just like the picture, just much much smaller...
ReplyDeleteuk 4.00mm (metric) hook = Us g/6 or uk/canadian = 8 :) and a 8 ply, double knit, dk worsted weight
Deletethis pattern does not get worked tightly, very loose tension required
Aww. This is seriously a cute hat. My friend just had a baby, and I've been looking up patterns to make something for him. Thanks so much.
ReplyDeleteHello...Dare I even try to begin crocheting with this pattern? I have 3 young granddaughters (3 weeks, 2 yrs., and 4) and I would love to make them matching caps. Am I being overconfident? Thank you. This cap is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteTerri, this was one of the first hats I crocheted, as long as you understand the cluster stitch and how its formed you will be fine! TRUST in yourself....
ReplyDeleteReally pretty hats for girls I get asked to make all the time are here I add on a crochet flowers and thread a lovely thin ribbon round them http://www.crochet-patterns-free.com/2012/05/free-crochet-baby-hat-patterns.html (with Step by step photos)
If you have ANY problems Terrie, just write a comment I usually check in ever day - you can do it! and they will look so sweet. :)
Hi - This is my first attempt at a baby hat. I've done the stitches up until the end of round 6 but I don't understand what rounds 7 to 12 should look like. What kind of stitches should I do?
ReplyDeleteworking into back loop only you can use a slip stitch or a single crochet depending on how much deeper you need the hat :)
DeleteCan you write this pattern using 4-ply #4 weight cotton yarn (lily sugar and Cream)or for your basic 3 ply Red Heart worsted weight yarn?
