After the popular post Crochet Baby hat Patterns I decided to try to make it. See how I did further down the page! 
This cute little number was inspired by a crochet baby hat I saw, When I saw this cute little crochet baby beanie I knew I just had to work it out! it will be a really great pattern for any size, just keep increasing the clusters row by row until desired size/circumference of head is achieved.
I used hook size UK 4.00mm and Dk baby yarn.
Stitches used in this pattern and Abbreviations:
Ch - chain
Dc - double crochet
YO - yarn over
Sl st - slip stitch
Tc - treble (or triple) crochet
Stitch:
how to make a cluster
Make a dc within one step of finishing (2 loops left on hook)
repeat (3 loops left on hook)
repeat (4 loops left on hook)
Yarn Over, pull through all 4 loops on hook.

***how to make the 1st round in photos using the magic circle technique: many have been struggling with this first round! I want to stress once you have gotten how to make the magic ring you will never go back!
However if you are really struggling create a ring to work into by Chain 5 slip st into 1st to creat ring and work round1 from:- Inside the ring, ch 3(counts as firts dc of cluster)
{cluster: Make a dc within one step of finishing (2 loops left on hook) Repeat (3 loops left on hook). YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook } chain2
*Cluster, ch 2. Repeat from * repeat a further 4 times. Pull ring tight.
Sl st to top ch of ch 3. Sl st in next st, sl st in ch-2 sp. (5 clusters)
Round 1: Magic Ring. Inside the ring, ch 3(counts as first dc of cluster)
{cluster: Make a dc within one step of finishing (2 loops left on hook) Repeat (3 loops left on hook). YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook } chain2 (PIC 1)
*Cluster, ch 2. Repeat from * repeat a further 4 times. Pull ring tight.
Sl st to top ch of ch 3. Sl st in next st, sl st in ch-2 sp. (5 clusters) (yes the photos above have only 4 clusters! I was making one for a preemie baby!)
Round 2: Ch 3. In ch-2 sp, make a dc within one step of finishing (2 loops left on hook). Repeat (3 loops left on hook) YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook. Ch 2
In same sp, {cluster} ch 2
*In the next ch-2 sp,{ cluster}
Repeat around in each ch-2 sp
Sl st to top ch of ch 3
sl st in ch-2 sp (10 clusters)
Round 3: Ch 3.(counts as 1st dc of cluster In *ch-2 sp, make a dc within one step of finishing (2 loops left on hook). Repeat (3 loops left on hook). YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook. Ch 2. In same sp, cluster, ch 2. (this creates 2 clusters in 1 space) In the next ch-2 sp, cluster, ch 2.(1 cluster in space)
In the next ch-2 sp, cluster, ch 2.(1 cluster in space) In next ch-2 sp, [cluster, ch 2; cluster, ch 2.]
Repeat around
(End on a single cluster in the sp.) Sl st to top ch of ch 3. Sl st in next st, sl st in ch-2 sp.
(15 clusters)

Round 4-6: Ch 3. Make a dc within one step of finishing (2 loops left on hook). Repeat (3 loops left on hook). YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook. Ch 2. *In the next ch-2 sp, Cluster, ch 2. Repeat from * in each ch-2 sp. Sl st to top ch of ch 3. Sl st in next st, sl st in ch-2 sp. (15 clusters)
Round 7-11 or 12: Loosely sl st around in back loops only.
Join
turn.
Finish with chs facing out
Finish off, weave in ends
Large outer Crochet Flower Pattern (Use Large hook size for outer, and 2 strands of yarn and next size down for 2nd crochet flower)
Round1 Chain 3 12dc in ring sl st into top 1st ch 3
Round 2: *Ch 3. In next dc, [double crochet, treble crochet double crochet]. Ch 3, sl st in next dc. Repeat from * around.
Finish off Weave in ends

working Into ring, ch2, sc9 (10 including the chain 2) sl st to join,
{chain3, dc, tr, dc, slip into sc of previous round} 1 petal made
continue {} around. 5 Petals.
Join, finish off with a long tail

Leaves pattern:
Rnd 1: With green, ch 5, * 2 dc on 3rd ch from hook, ch 2, sl st on top of last dc made.
Dc on same st as previous dc. Ch 2, sl st on same st**, sl st on next 2 chs.
Ch 3, repeat from * to **. Cut off.
Sew leaves to the back of flower.
I use this long tail to attach the flowers together and then attach onto the beanie itself, on this beanie I made 3 flowers, the 2 larger ones, identical but each with bigger hooks. Crochet flowers are fun, once you have mastered the basic crochet flower, have fun experimenting with different wools/yarns sizes of hooks .

DeleteI was wondering if the flower patteren is the same one for the main pic. I did it and it much much smaller. It seems like there are alot more stitches in he petals on the pic?
ReplyDeleteNo not the main pic, I found it very large and too bulky for the hat to make it practical to wear, the pattern is for the smaller pictures at the bottom of the post :)
ReplyDelete(to achieve a larger flower, an easy way is
working in the loop created, chain however many stitches you want (side of your petal) if you want to chain 4 at the start of your petal then work into the next stitch 5 times, start by by yarn over x3, and work as a dc, down the stitches on the hook to finish 5 times over )

I am also having a hard time, even after watching the videos. I get how to start the Magic Ring, but I am still uncertain. If someone can post a picture of this part "Round 1: Magic Ring. Inside the ring, ch 3(counts as firts dc of cluster)" and then another picture after the first cluster, that would really help. This is only my second project so I'm learning as I go! Thanks!

ReplyDeleteThe whole pattern you would need to add more increase rounds of clusters, use a thicker yarn and a larger hook!
DeleteUmm... not sure what I did wrong, but mine turned out extra small- like small small- too small for a preemie, I'm thinking. It'll fit my daughter's doll. I used us g/8 hook and a light (3) yarn- Red Heart Baby TLC. Is my yard just not thick enough? Are my stitches just waaaay too tight? I'm a very very new beginner- this is the second thing I've made and it took me a bit to work out the clusters, but I'm confident I'm doing them right- looks just like the picture, just much much smaller...
